Tom Hoefner (Writer/Director) - Tom created Race McCloud in 1997 while a student at St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn, NY, for a series of Murder Mystery Dinners. As he worked on various other projects over the years, Race stuck with him, and he was always tinkering with new ideas for the detective, placing the character in stories written for film (unproduced), comic books (undrawn), and podcasts (unheard). Finally, at the urging of his wife, Tom has brought Race back to the stage... and that seems to be working out pretty well for the both of them.
When not trying to find a place to tell Race's story, Tom has kept very busy. In 2008 he received his M.A. in Educational Theatre from NYU's Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development; it was while studying in this program that Tom began workshopping the current incarnation of Race McCloud under the tutelage of playwriting professor and esteemed director Stephen DiMenna. For the past seven plus years, Tom has served as the director of the Chapel Players of St. Joseph's College, where he has directed such plays as The Laramie Project, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, All in the Timing, The Graduate, Lend me a Tenor, and Months on End, to name a few; he is also an adjunct professor of Writing and Speech Communication at St. Joseph's. Tom has served as the director of theatre at Archbishop Molloy High School in Queens and for seven years was the producer/director of The Teen Drama Club of Holy Child Jesus Parish, also of Queens.
Tom's other prominent writing credits include his short plays Family Portrait (produced in festivals around the country, and particularly by MadLab Theaterin Columbus, OH), Perspective, and Hype, and a pair of children's plays, Fairy Tale Spin and The Elf, The Reindeer, and the French Pastry Chef Who Saved Christmas, written for the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. Tom has also worked with Agony Productions here in NYC, for whom he wrote the majority of their "Crash Comedy" sketch comedy showcase, and his Y2K comedy Hype has appeared in a number of local festivals. His most recent projects aside from Race McCloud include his latest play, a compilation of shorts and monologues entitled Writing In a Vacuum, and a screenplay entitled Just Debbie, a teenage romantic comedy. He is currently busy adapting Race McCloud into a young adult adventure novel.
As an actor, Tom is a very good writer and director.
Tom would like to thank his lovely wife, Jaime Lee, and their beautiful daughter, Gabriella Hope, for all of their support. He'd also like to thank Kev Gillespie for saving his life (metaphorically speaking).
